ACCIONA Advances Decarbonization at the Port of Valencia with Hydrogen Technology

ACCIONA has begun testing a high-power hydrogen-fueled electric generator at the North Terminal construction project in the Port of Valencia as part of its strategy to lower emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels in construction operations. The pilot system is already operating on site and will remain under evaluation through mid-June.

Developed by French technology company INOCEL, the generator is equipped with a 200 kW hydrogen fuel cell and is currently supplying electricity to a tower crane used in the KUGIRA caisson dock project, where large concrete caissons are being manufactured for the terminal expansion.

Construction sites of this nature often lack direct access to the electrical grid, making diesel generators the traditional power source. In this case, however, the hydrogen-powered alternative is expected to avoid the significant fuel consumption and approximately 80 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions that a conventional diesel generator would have produced during the testing period.

A key feature of the project is the generator’s high power output, which enables hydrogen technology to be evaluated in demanding construction applications with substantial energy requirements. The demonstration highlights the potential for hydrogen-based solutions to replace conventional fuels, particularly in remote or temporary worksites where grid connections are unavailable.

The initiative represents another step forward in deploying zero-emission technologies under real operating conditions and supports ACCIONA’s broader decarbonization strategy. By integrating innovative clean-energy systems into construction activities, the company aims to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and reduce the environmental impact of major infrastructure projects.
